1. Pick

Pick the items to go pack away. Make a list of those things that will be affected by the lower temperatures and damp E.g. things like outdoor furniture, sporting equipment. Make a list of those things that need not create clutter. It might be transitioning the summer for winter bedding, summer clothes, and sporting equipment.

2. Prepare

Prepare what you store. This ensures the items picked are kept in good condition prepare them adequately for storage. This means cleaning larger items of built up dirt and grime, washing or getting all bedding and clothing dry-cleaned ready for storage. The other advantage is once Spring rolls around all the items are ready for use. Also if you are storing items that require fuel (e.g. petrol lawnmowers) make sure they are emptied before storage.

3. Pack

Pack carefully and thoughtfully. We’ve mentioned this before but the way items are packed can affect things greatly. Consider how your items need to be packed. Does the item need further insulation, or protection so that it doesn’t get scratched by other items? 

4. Placement

Finally, think of placement. Poor placement in storage can take up needless space and can cost you money. Consider, if the items can they be packed in different ways to maximise the amount of space in your self-storage? Could items be packed vertically, or perhaps have a thin layer of plywood over several boxes to create another layer? But also think about what items need to be accessed easily and make sure they are placed near the front of the unit.
