Moving house, going abroad for a while, needing somewhere to put business goods, or simply having too many clothes lying around your place – there are many reasons why people may decide to use a storage unit.
You may have a lot of possessions that need to go into a storage unit. But, how do you go about making the most of the space at your disposal at your storage unit?
There’s an art to packing away your clothes neatly in a storage unit if you’re a real fashionista who owns a truckload of clothes. At Now Storage, we have curated these tips and pointers on how to pack clothes for a storage unit. Carry on reading to learn more.
If you’re moving house, you’ll still need to wear clothes in the time between packing up your old place and finally moving in! Therefore, remember to put some clothes aside into some suitcases and keep them with you. That way you will still have enough clothes to wear while the rest of your items are in storage.
Have you got clothes you’re particularly fond of? In that case, you should do all you can to protect these clothes from deteriorating while in storage due to things like moisture, dust, mould and mildew. For long-term storage, we suggest using plastic containers with secure clip-on lids.
Before packing your clothes into storage, it’s a good idea to wash and iron every item of clothing. Doing so will enable your clothes to stay fresh for much longer! If you pack dirty clothes which aren’t clean, the stains and odours will inevitably start to settle into your garments. The last thing you need is to replace those clothes after taking them out of storage and realising that the odours and stains are too far gone.
You need to allow your clothes some breathing space when they are in storage boxes. With this in mind, it’s better to place larger clothes like jackets, winter jumpers, and so on at the bottom, and lighter ones such as t-shirts on top.
Rolling clothes may mean they take up more space in storage. However, you’ll find that rolling is much better for keeping clothes in top condition than folding them. Folding can create creases in clothes that are pretty hard to remove. So, we say, go for rolling your clothes instead of folding them.
You want your best clothes to leave your storage unit in the same condition as they went in. So, hang up your fancy clothes with hangers and wrap them in garment bags to keep them well protected.
