Whether you will be using a storage unit for business or personal purposes, make a list of the items you are packing away and which box you are putting them in. This way, when you go back to look for something in the future, it will be much easier to figure out its whereabouts – or whether it was actually stored there in the first place.
Do you have hoards of boxes that you intend on stacking on top of one another in your storage unit? If so, working out which one is which could become a tricky task. Therefore, marking your boxes with a pen or using sticky labels will help you distinguish between different boxes a lot more easily.
An organised storage unit starts with thinking carefully about where you’re going to place your possessions to get the maximum use of the space at your disposal. Lining the walls first alongside packing your storage unit from back to front is a good idea and will help to create walkable aisle spaces, making it easier for you to access all parts of your unit. You may also choose to use a heavy-duty mobile storage cart with wheels to transport your heavy boxes with greater ease around the storage unit.
When organising your storage unit, it makes sense to place items you will need to access regularly right at the front. This is far better than tripping over as you step across endless rows of boxes trying to get to important possessions placed at the back of the unit.
Take into account the weight of items you’re organising in a storage unit. Start at the bottom and work upwards when stacking your boxes vertically. To make sure you avoid your becoming damaged or crushed, try putting the heaviest boxes on the bottom, and the lighter ones on top.
Taking photos will improve your organisation and help remind you exactly where items belonging to you are located in the unit so that you can access them more quickly. Having photographs of items in your storage unit could also serve as robust evidence and help you to make a solid insurance claim to insurance providers. Therefore, alongside having an up-to-date inventory, taking photos of your possessions in a storage unit is definitely a wise idea.
Plastic boxes are sturdier than cardboard. This makes them ideal for storing fragile items such as crockery. On the other hand, cardboard boxes are usually lighter and cheaper to buy. Plastic boxes are also less susceptible to water damage. So, in order to store fragile items safely, you’re better off using plastic boxes.
If you are storing large furniture items in your storage unit, it makes sense to dismantle them to save space. This will allow you to stack them more space-efficiently so that they don’t totally dominate the space.
These are some handy ideas for creating an organised storage unit for you to bear in mind. Interested in hiring a storage unit with Now Storage at one of our fantastic state-of-the-art facilities?
